Description
From JapanWorld's First Stamp Penny Black 15th/May 1840 Precious Postal Envelope
Delivery: 1840/May/15 (May Date Cover)
The following is my personal opinion. For your reference...
This is the first stamp in the world. It was issued on May 1, 1840. It was issued on May 1, 1840 (about 180 years ago).
The postal service began accepting mail on May 6. This envelope was addressed to Cheapside in London on May 15. This envelope was used only 9 days after May 6, which is very rare.
The postmark is a red Maltese Cross. The red postmark was found to be removable, and in February of the following year, the stamp was changed to red and the postmark to black, so it was used for only nine months.
Many of the stamps were not yet blinded and cut with scissors, so some of the design has been cut off, but I think this is a particularly lucky one because it has a full margin on all four sides.
